A fountain for the refreshment of travelers already existed in this place in the middle ages. During the short reign of Gioacchino Murat he contributed to the system of urban water supply and distribution points.
In 1812 the fountain was enlarged and renovated assuming its present appearance of five spouts, each decorated with a mask, from which fresh water flows even today.
In memory of the renewal the following verses were put above the fountain: The one on the right reads:
"This is the work of the universal vote,
even if citizens enjoy it at least for a while,
you too - or passersby - the pace stops,
the water is clear and appropriate to the site;
drink as though you want to quench your thirst,
while the shade invites you to rest . "
The one on the left reads:
All other things have always been left unfinished and never useful because of those who have dealt with it or have made decisions. This work was carried out and completed for the whole population only because everyone agreed and didn’t remain silent as often, and they weren’t deceived as always.
